Imola Five II

Frank Stella

American (b. 1936)
Imola Five II (1983)
Woodcut and relief print
Gift of Judie and Howard L. Ganek, 2010.12

Stella’s large-scale woodcut and relief print takes its title from the town in Italy where the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari racetrack is located. It is part of a series based on the artist’s interest in car racing, with each print named for an international racetrack. Overlapping green lines echo the twists and turns of a racecourse, while thinner blue lines evoke tire treads. Stella made the series with Kenneth Tyler, a master printer who specialized in helping a distinguished list of artists realize their ideas.
