K Column

Liz Quisgard

American (b. 1929)
K Column (2003)
Acrylic on cardboard
Gift of the Artist, 2017.4.6

Inspired by the patterns in Navajo textiles, oriental rugs, and Byzantine mosaics, Quisgard creates her art using fiber and yarn as well as found objects. This pillar was created out of a cardboard Sonotube (used on construction sites to pour concrete into smooth-sided columns and piers) that the artist found on the street near her lower Manhattan studio as well as from found pieces of wood for the base. Her focus is on covering every viewable surface in rich patterns in jewel-like colors.
